Grass Track Racing May 2022

On Friday 13th May, some children from years 4 and 5 participated in a Cycle League event at the Hackney Downs Grass Track. A grass track is similar to the track racing you find in velodromes with riders competing around a short oval on fixed wheel track bikes(supplied) in a number of short races of differing formats. It is a mass start race with riders held at the start. Each year group and gender raced separately. Well done to all of the children who took part and a special congratulations to Dillon (year 4), who got a silver medal and Chinaza (year 5), who got a bronze medal.

Cyclocross at Hackney Downs November 2021

On Friday 12th November, 12 of our year 5 and 6 children competed in the next round of the Hackney Schools Cycle league. This time it was 'Cyclocross' at Hackney Downs.
Cyclocross racing is conducted on a mixture of surfaces – grass, mud, tarmac- with obstacles – hills, corners, hurdles - round a short course over a number of laps. Riders usually have to jump off their bike at some point and run with it. It is a mass start race with riders gridded at the start.
The children were fantastic. This was the first time many of the children had tried this kind of a cycling event and they were fantastic. Oscar, from Year 5, came 1st in the year 5 boys' competition from a field of 30 children from 11 Hackney Schools. What a result! Look out for news of the next event in December.
